Writing Journal 12.29.2019: Last journal of the year sees a slight holiday slump, but I realized what caused it

I’ll keep the update short tonight.

I had hoped that I would get a whole bunch of writing done this week when I was off, but I got bogged down during the Christmas week. However, I think I realized what threw me off.

Right now I’m writing a fan fiction on Archive Of Out Own, which allows you to post your fan fiction work. You do it on a chapter by chapter basis. You could post everything at once, but what it winds up being is usually a serialized story, like mine is. You can check out what I’m working on here.

Anyway, I wound up outlining what’s going on in each of the chapters and throughout the story to help me out with what I am going to write. One of the issues is, sometimes I get too rigid with my thinking when it comes to those outline issues. Sometimes I think it’s best to put out shorter chapters more frequently rather than long chapters over longer intervals. Basically, I think I was trying to shove two chapters worth of story into a single chapter. I have to remember that the outline, like the writing itself, is always subject to change.

To be honest, though, I’ve had a lot worse writing weeks, especially earlier in this year. I’ll post it below like I have been doing.

My plans are for not just this post but two more posts sometime this week. The first of them will be an update on the projects that I have in various stages and my plans for them. The second will be a recap of my writing stats for 2019 and how they compared to last year, for sure.

I also likely need to set up some upcoming posts for my Facebook and Twitter writing pages. I’ve gotten so lazy about posting new content on there, to be honest, even though these blog posts show up there too.

Anyway, hope the rest of 2019 goes fine. The stats are below. Have a good night.

Writing Journal 12.22.2019: …

…will be coming, but it will happen later tomorrow. I’ll just update this post tomorrow and go from there. Thanks, guys. [EDIT: here it is]

I am officially on break for the remainder of the calendar year and an extra day and I could not be happier.

I have a few items to get to, most specifically an end-of-year look at my writing data for 2019 and an update to where all of my WIPs are in various stages of development/revision/planning/etc. Expect to see the first one on Jan. 1 and the second earlier, hopefully this week.

Writing went slow, but I was doing some revisions this week and got more time in on that. I want to get this fanfiction project off my chest, which at the rate I’m writing is likely going to happen by the end of the school year I would think. Ironically, it might wind up being the largest manuscript in size that I’ve yet written and yet it is intended to be totally nonprofit. (Imagine 20-year-old me doing that; I don’t think I ever would have attempted it.)

Anyway, stats are below. I’ll really be interested in seeing what the numbers for the entire year are. I think I might start crunching those tonight if I get time.

See you later.

Writing Journal 12.15.2019: Writing slower but still consistently as I ease into winter break

Hi everyone,

Going to keep this short. I want to get in some writing tonight on at least one project (you can figure out which one) and take another look at some of my planning for Project F that will involve playing around with the mapping program Wonderdraft, which I like working with. If you’re interested in actually reading my fanfic, here’s a link to it on Archive of Our Own.

It is likely time to give an update to everyone on my projects, which I think is going to be a Friday thing. (I hope. Regular readers know that I have been open to blowing a deadline or two.) Lesson learned this year is it’s OK to have a lot of projects but not a lot of deadlines.

I’m really looking forward to Christmas break starting this Friday, but we will be involved with a lot of clean-out over that time at the house, in preparation for its eventual sale and move due to recent IRL events. Now that the move is more of a certainty, things are going to progress pretty quickly. Within six months I am likely to be halfway across the state (southern central Iowa rather than central eastern Iowa).

Anyway, I’m writing stuff and writing it pretty consistently. I’ll leave with the stats below, but in the next couple of weeks, I will work on putting together:

  • A project update
  • A review of my 2019 stats
  • Maybe some other odds and ends if I really get ambitious (hehe).

OK, stats are below. See you, everyone.

Writing Journal 12.8.2019: It was delayed a couple days…

Hi, everyone, sorry forgetting so terminally lazy in some regards with the blog. Things are winding down for the calendar year for work and I had to get a few things in order during the past few days.

Also, I’ve now officially confirmed to my bosses that I will not be returning to the school after my contract winds down so I can rejoin my wife in (roughly) central Iowa. So, that is good news, although obviously all of this preparation, initial or otherwise, to move on to a different situation is pretty disruptive of several things, including settling down and figuring out a plan of action for the writing other than this fanfiction that has been obsessing me lately.

However, it has been productive. Here’s the totals from last week. I’ll try and get some extra posts around the holidays, and an update on projects and where I’m at with them. Take care.

Writing Journal 12.1.2019: A short note

Hi, everyone,

I’m keeping this short – may do a midweek update if I get motivated enough, maybe not. I’ll be in bed here pretty soon, to be honest.

I might wind up giving an end-of-year update on what the status of projects are. I think the thing I realized this year is that while I can work on more than one project at a time, it’s best to have goals for only a couple of them.

Three more weeks of teaching and that will be the end of the calendar year 2019. It’s good that things are speeding along.

Anyway, here’s the stats for last week. It’s a bit of an improvement productivity-wise for me over even the past couple of weeks, so that’s a happy thing at least.

Take care, everyone.
