Writing Journal 10.28.2019: More dreams of writing (or planning of it) than actual writing this week. But that’s not horrific.

OK, another quick journal, moving along, yadda yadda.

Did a lot more planning this week than writing. Thinking about this Project F I’ve got in mind… it’s becoming more real to me. Thanks to Wonderdraft, I’ve started to build this new world that this story might take place in. It’s beginning to suggest things to me, like political alliances, nations, cultures, the movement of people over several centuries.

The more I consider it, the bigger it looms over my imagination. I wonder if it’s the same feeling that other authors have gotten when they’ve first read Tolkien, Martin, Sanderson, Le Guin, Alexander, or one of the other greats of fantasy and thought to themselves, could they ever try something like that? It’s getting to be that type of thinking for me.

And, it’s a bit intimidating. Have you ever seen the level of detail that goes into these types of books? Have you noticed that the culture that everyone just accepts in contemporary fiction, you have to totally rebuild or remix when you try and set a story in a whole new world? That’s the case both for science fiction and fantasy – it always blew my mind that Frank Herbert had to include an 18-page glossary of new or reused vocabulary for his book Dune. I always read that book when I was a kid and thought I could never be that creative. Now… I want to try to create that type of world.

I have some ideas for characters yet without names, nations with maps and yet without names, and other scenes begun to be written in my head but not yet on the page. It’s not quite a story yet, more like a weird stew of geography and character traits and themes. But it’s getting there. This is going to be a Thanksgiving/Christmas turkey of a story to create. And, I’m OK with that.

That’s about all I’ll say about that for now, except for you will see that Wonderdraft review at some point, but I’m not giving a solid date because I can’t seem to stick to those recently.

I’ve also been having difficulty keeping up posts on my writing pages on Facebook and Twitter. I’ll work at posting more, even if it’s just something stupid I say that’s writing based every once in a while.

Anyway, here’s the numbers. Holding steady, basically, although there was a little less writing and a lot more planning this week. See you around.

+3,389 words written.

Days writing:  2 of 7.

Days revising/planning: 6 of 7 for 600 total minutes.

Writing Journal: 10.20.2019 [EDIT: 10.21.2019, Oops]: Treading water, but feel like I’m being creative

What you are seeing in the featured photo is the Iowa State Capitol. I’m in Des Moines (the Iowa state capital) for the next couple of days, so I’m hoping that I get to sit down and get some writing done when I’m not busy.

Honestly, not much change from last time; still writing the same stuff I have been for the past couple of weeks. This little side project I have going on I want to get done – maybe by the end of the year? It’s sort of an obsession with me at this point.

I’m also hoping to finish the Wonderdraft review in the next few days too – I’ve already started it and you’ll see it here first.

OK, cutting this short because it’s late, but here’s the stats from last week. Enjoy.

+4,466 words written.

Days writing: 6 of 7.

Days revising/planning: 5 of 7 for 240 total minutes.

Daily Writing Goals Met (500+ words or 30 minutes of planning/revisions): 7 of 7 days.

Writing Journal 10.13.2019: Holding steady

Just like the title says, holding steady.

Even the photo is a little bit holding steady. It’s another shot of one of my bookcases. (As always, shout out if you recognize a book and/or see one of your favorites.)

Again, this will be short.

Things are still going. I haven’t had the chance to do too many public events since the summer – it’s a bit off to try and do publicity as a local writer when I’m not likely to be living in my local area by this time next year. It will be interesting to live closer to Des Moines – I’ve heard good things about the writing community there.

I’ll also try and connect with writers in my own local community, but since it will be about half the population of my current town, and there is a strong but quite small group of writers there, I’m frankly not sure what I will find. (If there are any writers from the Lucas County, Iowa area, I’d love to hear from you.)

Not much new to report from my past few weekly journals, so I won’t repeat myself.

I’m glad texting exists because my wife feels like she is around even if she isn’t. ❤️

The #USMNT beating Cuba 7-0 was a cool soccer match.

The stats to finish off (not much difference from the past few weeks):

+6,420 words written.

Days writing: 5 of 7.

Days revising/planning: 2 of 7 for 180 total minutes.

Daily Writing Goals Met (500+ words or 30 minutes of planning/revisions): 7  of 7 days.

I’ve started writing a Wonderdraft review that I’m going to work and try and put out this week. (Fingers crossed?)

See you later.

Writing Journal 10.6.2019: Keeping busy just a little more than before, and that’s OK

This is going to be a pretty brief entry.

There’s not too many writing updates from last week. I think I was writing steadily this week, just a few fewer words than the previous week, but except for one day that I just took off, there was some good work in there.

No special reports on projects, although I did do a bit of planning on Project F (my original fantasy project) using Wonderdraft. I have to admit that I have not read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy-specific advice about writing, even though these genres have been part of my reading life ever since the beginning. One of my personal observations is that once you create a world and can see it, certain things can suggest themselves to you, like how people live, what political structures might exist, and so on. I keep saying that I need to do a review of Wonderdraft and I’m getting closer to actually doing it. It’s a fantastic tool that I think I will keep using for planning purposes, especially any other sci-fi and-or fantasy projects I tackle.

OK, the stats are below. Have a good writing week, everyone.

+8,210 words written.

Days writing: 6 of 7.

Days revising/planning: 2 of 7 for 150 total minutes.

Daily Writing Goals Met (500+ words or 30 minutes of planning/revisions): 6 of 7 days.
