Writing Journal, 7 August 2024: Wrapped up a decent July

So, as we are now in the month of August (or as I recently heard it called online, the “Long Sunday” for teachers), and I look back on July and realize how much more demanding I’m getting of myself and my writing.

I’ll list the stats first before trying to analyze it.

This week was noticeably better than last week’s on all levels. The total writing count for July made it my second most productive writing month other than this June, which might have been my most productive month ever. When I total up what I’ve written so far, I’m about 13,000 words ahead of the pace to write a minimum of 200,000 this year, which has become my new quota. I’m well on my way to hitting my other goal for the year, meeting my daily writing goals at least 75 percent of the time.

But keeping track of my writing goals has just made me more demanding, I think. When I’d be disappointed with a 5,000-word month, I now try and shoot for 5,000 per week. And now I try and shoot for 20,000 words per month rather than just being satisfied with 15,000. In all honesty, I like the fact I can use data to see how much more productive I am than what I used to be, and how I can get better.

I’ve got about eleven more days, more or less, until school starts. I’ll see how well I can use them.

See you next week.
