Writing Journal 11 December 2024: Another week in the books

The first week of December 2024 is done and dusted and for once I don’t have much of a complaint about my productivity.

2024 goals update:

  • At least 200,000 words written for the 2024 calendar year. Bonus points if I made it past the all-time personal record of 215,152 words I set last year.
As of the end of last week, I have written 207,720 words for the year 2024. I actually met my “minimum quota” of 200,000 words two weeks ago
I am just 7,423 words away from matching my personal best record of last year. At this point, two decent weeks will let me match it, so I might have a new record wrapped up before Christmas 2024. It’s heady stuff for me. Setting goals works, kids.
  • Meeting my daily writing goals (at least 500 words written or 30 minutes spent revising or planning new work) at least 75 percent of the year.
Complete. I’ll figure out what my percentage for the year will be, but I’m thinking it will be somewhere north of 80 percent. I might have found a new goal for next year.
  • (Recently added) complete my rough draft of The Yank Striker 2 (second in The Yank Striker series), which should be approximately 75,000 words, by the end of the calendar year.
As of the end of last week, I’m now at 70,361 words on the rough draft. I will need to average about 200 words per day on this project for the rest of the year.
The closer I get to the end of the year, the more likely I think it is I will be able to match the word count goal. I have been seriously considering whether I will have a full rough draft by the end of the process.
From where I am now, I have about three more chapters constituting about nine or 10 scenes remaining in the book. I’m wondering whether I will be able to squeeze that in in less then 5,000 words and will have to add some text to it. Then again, there is a good portion of one part of the earlier text I am definitely planning on slashing, so it might all even out in the end.
What will be nice is if I have a semi-coherent rough draft by 31 December 2024 that I can set aside for at least a month or six weeks before attempting the first round of revisions. We’ll see what happens.

Soon the Christmas break beckons, but before there’s about two more weeks of school before. Everyone is looking ahead, I think, but I have enjoyed the year at my new school district.

All you writers keep writing and everyone keep safe.
